Fashion Forward

By Cytlalli Ruiz-Chapman

Ask Toronto’s fashion diehards what the best time of the year is and chances are they will say Toronto’s LG Fashion Week Beauty by L’Oreal Paris.

Hosting a roster of some of Canada’s most talented designers, fall fashion week — running Oct. 19-24 — will offer a glimpse of what is to come in
Spring 2010 collections and trends to look for.

As the second largest event of its kind in North America, LG Toronto
Fashion Week has gained serious national and international recognition. It has attracted A-List sponsors like LG, Lincoln (sponsor of both the front row
and the most exclusive VIP area, showcasing the Lincoln MKS at an interior
display and running a contest for one person to receive event VIP treatment), L’Oréal, and Peroni. It has showcased such Canadian designers as DSquared2, Pink Tartan, Andy The Anh and Bustle.

It’s no small feat preparing for a glamourous event of this scale. That
responsibility lies at the offices of the Fashion Design Council of Canada
(FDCC), a non-government, not-for-profit committee dedicated to supporting
and enriching the Canadian fashion community.

I had the good fortune of talking to a number of returning and notable
designers, all of whom will be showcasing their illustrious collections, about
their experiences with Fashion Week.

Shawn Hewson of the highly sought-after men’s clothing line, Bustle,
says, “I have lots of love for the Canadian design community and I think that LG Fashion Week and the FDCC are so integral to the success of Canadian designers. We will always show at LG Fashion Week in Toronto.”
Fashion Week has helped present designers to the uncompromising
international fashion community. One of Canada’s leading designers, Andy
The Anh, describes how the exposure has encouraged him: “It’s been a while since I’ve been showing my work at Fashion Week and every season is a challenge. Every Fashion Week I improve more and more. It is always a great exposure to North American and international buyers.”

Kimberly Newport-Mimran, president and head designer of Pink Tartan,
has also become a staple at the event. She describes her transition into the
international community as “challenging and exciting.” In 2004 she opened
a showroom in New York to display her thriving label and since has gained a
strong celebrity following.

Designers are given a platform to display and present their work to a broad
audience. The event also gives new and rising talent the opportunity to demonstrate their flair.

One up-and-coming designer who has been generating a great deal of
attention is Travis Taddeo. His rebellious street wear has turned the Montreal club scene upside down. “It’s game on. It helps you grow, that is for sure,” Taddeo says about his involvement with Toronto’s Fashion Week.

Evan Biddell not only won Project Runway, he has won over Canada with
his designs. He continues to gain a strong following and acknowledges the
FDCC’s hard work. “It’s nice to have a runway built for you. They create
a buzz and we capitalize on it,” he says.

Designers, models, buyers and entertainers will be out in full force. As
they strut the city in their best attire, fashion enthusiasts and diehards will
get the opportunity to enjoy and appreciate the carefully thought-out designs.
